The Norwegian road freight transport sector
Never studied before by the CNR, the Norwegian RFT sector is evolving in a unique context in Europe. Outside the EU but in the European Economic Area (EEA), 91% of the Norwegian RFT activity is mainly oriented on domestic market. Its international activity, whose volume still represented 15% of total activity 10 years ago, is in sharp decline. On international trips, the Norwegian companies use EMS type vehicles to better integrate into the market of their Swedish neighbor.
RFT drivers benefit from a generous sectoral collective agreement. The monthly salary observed by the CNR exceeds €4,500/month gross. Despite the low level of social security contributions, among the lowest in Europe with 14% for the employer and 7.9% for the employee, the annual cost of the Norwegian driver reaches a record level of 71,774€, or 44.01€ per hour of driving or 0.69€ per kilometer.
The total cost for a 60 tonne Norwegian EMS unit assigned internationally is estimated at 230,464€ or €1.92 per kilometer. Relative to the tonne transported, this cost is comparable to that of a 40 tonne Belgian set, but lower than the French, Italian or Dutch.
